KNC offers free admission on days during the Earth Day Celebration, Buy Local Art & Gift Fair, and for some events. We also offer free admission to the trails on major holidays (Visitor Center is closed). Please visit the Calendar for a list of free admission days!

Following are a few of the frequently asked questions to prepare for a great day exploring in nature. Questions? Make the most of your visit by coming prepared for a fun, comfortable, and safe outdoor experience. Here’s what we recommend packing:
- Water: Stay hydrated while exploring over 14 miles of beautiful trails.
- Sunscreen: Protect your skin during sunny hikes and open‑meadow walks.
- Bug Repellent: Mosquitos and other insects are common in wooded and wetland areas.
- Binoculars: Ideal for spotting wildlife along the prairies, forests, and river overlooks.
- Comfortable Footwear: Trails range from easy to difficult, so sturdy shoes are best.
- Weather‑Appropriate Clothing: Dress in layers and be prepared for changing conditions.
KNC offers year‑round outdoor exploration, and weather can change quickly, especially in forested or wetland areas.
- Spring: Trails can be muddy; waterproof boots recommended.
- Summer: Bring extra water and sun protection for warm, sunny prairies.
- Fall: Temperatures fluctuate; layers help you stay comfortable.
- Winter: Trails remain open, and snowshoeing is welcome; dress warmly and check for weather‑related trail safety updates.
For guest safety, trails may close during high winds (over 35 mph) or during extreme weather and bad air quality days. Always check current conditions before visiting.

All‑Terrain Wheelchairs
We are proud to offer GRIT Freedom Chairs, available in both youth and adult sizes, designed specifically for trail use. These all‑terrain wheelchairs allow individuals with mobility challenges to explore more of KNC’s scenic habitats. Chairs are available to reserve during your visit. Learn more here >
Accessible Trails
Several trails—including the Habitat Haven and Arboretum trails—are wheelchair and stroller accessible, offering options for trail users to use with scenic routes through diverse natural areas.
Visitor Center Accessibility
Our Visitor Center includes accessible pathways, restrooms, and exhibit areas. Recent upgrades—including improved flooring, acoustic materials, and renovated spaces—enhance comfort, accessibility, and the overall visitor experience.

- Lower level accessibility and power assist doors in both levels of Visitor Center
- Sensory room and nursing room
- Accessible, Gender-Neutral, and Men's/Women's restrooms (Additional seasonal outdoor restrooms may be available depending on time of year)
Trails
With more than 14 miles of trails winding through woods, wetlands, streams, and prairie habitats, KNC offers a variety of difficulty levels and scenic experiences for all ages and abilities.
Gathering Spaces
We also have Gathering Spaces where a group can gather and eat lunch including TreeTops in the Visitor Center and the Arboretum Picnic area. Relax in hammocks or stop for a picnic lunch under the tree canopy at the Habitat Haven Trailhead just outside the Visitor Center.
Maps & Wayfinding
Trail maps are available at the Visitor Center or Welcome Station, offering guidance for planning a route suited to your comfort and mobility needs.

Trail Safety Guidelines
- Check Conditions Before You Go:
Trails may close during high winds over 35 mph for visitor safety. Always verify conditions before visiting. - Stay on Marked Trails:
Remaining on designated paths protects sensitive habitats and ensures your safety in natural areas. - Wear Proper Footwear:
Trails vary from easy to difficult and may include uneven terrain, slopes, or wet areas. Sturdy shoes help prevent injuries. - Prepare for Weather:
Conditions can change quickly. Bring water, layers, sunscreen, and weather‑appropriate clothing for the season. - Use Trail Maps:
Maps are available at the Visitor Center or Welcome Station to help you navigate safely.

Wildlife Respect & Conservation Reminders
- Observe Wildlife from a Distance:
Many species at KNC rely on undisturbed habitats. Quiet observation keeps them safe and stress‑free. - Off‑Trail Exploration To preserve natural environments and for your safety, please remain on marked trails at all times. Many habitats are sensitive to foot traffic, and staying on trails ensures they remain healthy and accessible for all.
- No Pets Allowed:
To protect wildlife and maintain ecological balance, dogs and other pets are not permitted anywhere on KNC property—even on leash. - Do Not Feed Animals:
Feeding wildlife disrupts natural behaviors and diets. - No Drones:
drones are not permitted, as they can disturb wildlife, disrupt nesting sites, and impact the quiet nature experience for all visitors.

General Visitor Etiquette
- Share the Trail:
Be courteous to hikers of all ages and abilities. Allow faster groups to pass and yield on narrow sections. - Keep Noise to a Minimum:
Soft voices help preserve the peaceful atmosphere and improve everyone’s chance of seeing wildlife. - Pack In, Pack Out:
Help keep the Nature Center healthy by carrying out all trash and personal belongings.
Buy Local Art & Gift Fair
Saturday, December 5, 2026 9 am – 4 pm
Free admission to the Fair and trails all day!
KNC’s Buy Local Art & Gift Fair is a celebration of local artists featuring unique booths from top local artisans. The quality and variety of work, friendly artists, and festive atmosphere have made this an annual tradition you don’t want to miss! KNC Members also get invited to the popular Jingle Mingle the evening prior to the art fair.
Workshops & Events
Learn about the ancient tradition of wreath making. Paint a gourd birdhouse to bring home for a feathered friend. Head to the forest to gather materials for a hand-crafted meal using foraged delicacies.
